In Hoc Signo Vinces, Why The True Cross Of Jesus Christ Will Always Conquer

The Beloved Father, The Beloved Son Jesus, The Beloved Holy Spirit, Three persons in One God, existed forever outside of time and creation.  Out of pure, out pouring love, God created the spiritual world of the angels and the universe in perfection for man to be happy and the center of creation.

Creation of EveBut the fallen angel, satan, helped Eve to disobey God’s only prohibition to eat of the knowledge of good and evil.  Eve easily convinced Adam to disobey, and ever since that original sin, there has been so much suffering caused by men’s rebellion against goodness.

Cain kills his brother, blood shed after blood shed.  Then God cleanses creation with the flood.  This does not work, killing, sexual sins and rebellion continues.

God tries to  start a new people with Abraham and Sarah.   He again makes a new covenant of love with them.  But Abraham’s great grandsons sell their own brother Joseph (out of jealousy) into slavery.  In turn eventually all the Israelite family is enslaved in Egypt.

Sinai to make sacrifice and to return to God.  God gives them His divine laws, the Ten Commandments.  He again instructs them how to be His people.  But again right off the worship the Golden Calf.

Once in the Promised Land, they again turn to false gods and even sacrifice their own children to demons.  God sends his servants the prophets to correct them, but they are rejected and killed.

Finally God asks His Only Begotten Son, Jesus, to obediently take on human nature, so as one like man in every way, He could reconcile men to God.  Jesus, God in the form of a poor baby was born of the Virgin Mary.

Nativity and Adoration of the Shepherds_BARTOLO DI FREDIHe proved that He was God by the miracles He constantly performed.  Raising the dead, healing all sorts of sickness, casting out demons, multiplying food, changing water into wine, calming storms, walking on water, reading hearts, forgiving sins, turning into brilliant light on Mt. Tabor.

Then the Jews turned Him over to the Romans to be tortured and killed on the cross because He challenged them and they were jealous of Him.  The tiny baby, God Only Son, is now rejected, scorned, spit on, beaten, scourged, force to carry His cross, stripped naked and nailed to the cross to slowly die on Good Friday.

jesus_pg18Jesus forgave all those who did this to Him.  He rose from the dead on Sunday and was seen by hundreds before returned to Glory from where He had been.

On the Cross is where satan was defeated, death conquered, sins forgiven and heaven opened to all who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  And for this reason the Holy Cross is of infinite value to Catholics.

When in 312, and Constantine was preparing to fight against the Roman Emperor, Jesus appeared to him and showed him the Cross.  He told him “In Hoc Signo Vinces”, In this sign win.  So Constantine put the Holy Cross on His standard and shields.  He was victorious at the Milvian bridge and went on from there to conquer all of the Roman Empire, east and west.

194_03_VisionConstantineHis mother, St. Helen, had a vision as to where the True Holy Cross was buried.  When she discovered it, she had a dead man touched to the Cross and a sick woman touched.  The man came back to life and the woman regained here health.  Here is what happened:

Cross_Darmstadt Altarpiece Constantine and His Mother Helena Venerating the True Cross_UNKNOWN MASTER, GermanThen she had thus cleansed the place {from the idol of Venus} where the Cross had stood, Helen caused deep excavations to be made, which resulted in the discovery of three crosses, and, apart from them, the writing which had been nailed on that of the Lord. But which of the crosses had been His was unknown, and was only manifested by a miracle. Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem, after offering solemn prayers to God, touched with each of the three a woman who was afflicted with a grievous disease. The two first had no effect, but at the touch of the third she was immediately healed.”  St. Helen then had the Cross mounted on Mt. Calvary for al the pilgrims to venerate.

In the early 600’s Chosroes, King of Persia invaded Jerusalem, kill thousands of Catholics and stole the Holy Cross.  Emperor Heraclius defeated Chosroes.  His son killed Chosroes and eventually returned the Holy Cross to the Emperor on terms that he could rule his country.

When Heraclius tried to carry the Holy Cross into Jerusalem, he could not budge it.  The patriarch of Jerusalem, Zacharias, said: Consider O emperor how poorly you are imitating the poverty and humility of Jesus Christ when you carry His Cross in these triumphal robes”.  So Heraclius, clothed in poor clothing and bear foot, was able then to carry the Cross into the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre.

Over and over the Holy Cross has been the instrument of victory for Catholics.  Again in the Battle of Lepanto (1571), Don Juan of Austria had a banner that had the Crucifix and the words, “In Hoc Signo Vinces”.

Journey Of The Cross And Icon Takes Place In SydneyThe Holy Cross is the instrument to beat the devil and heal the wounds of sins in our soul. Suffering is always part of any true Catholic.  May we see in our own suffering for Jesus’ Kingdom as the way to victory for Him and victory over our sinfulness.
