Most of us, when we are going over the speed limit and see a Highway Patrol, we automatically fear him because he may give us a ticket. But when it comes to fearing God and HIs ticket, we just go right on breaking His laws and have, from none, to very very little fear of His punishment.
Progressive, liberal Catholics teach that we should not fear God. They teach that God is Love. Therefore we should not fear Him, but love Him. All this is true, but only part of what the Bible says. I have quoted a few of the Biblical passages for you to read and meditate on. You may disagree with them, but that does not make you right and God wrong. The Bible is the Word of God. Your opinion is the word of man.
Jesus says; “And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matt. 10:28.
This passage form St. Matthew is very strong. It says it all. Do not fear man who can only persecute you, hurt you, steal from you, ridicule you, and kill you, here and now. It is over with here. No, fear God, who can not only take your life, but also put you in Hell for all eternity. Jesus is the one who is saying this. We have better take it very very seriously.
St. Paul goes on to say that we need to live in the fear of God too. “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and of the spirit, perfecting sanctification in the fear of God. 2 Cor. 7:1.
The perfection of the fear of God is wisdom and understanding. Eccl. 21: 13.
Yes, we traditional Catholics know that God is Love and we enjoy His Love every minute of our days. But we also know that He is God and He punishes evil behavior.

Any loving Father disciplines His children. We love God too and do not want to displease Him. “Persevere under discipline. God dealeth with you as with his sons; for what son is there, whom the father doth not correct?” Hebrews 12:7
