Exactly 200 Years Ago, (May 24, 1814), Pope Pius VII Made Mary, Help of Christians, An Official Feastday

Pope Saint Pius V is said to have given the name, Auxilium Christianorum, to Mary, after her help in the miraculous victory at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 against the Ottoman Turks.

OURLADYHELPOFCHRISTIANSNapoleon imprisoned Pope Pius VII for three years in Savona.  After being released, Pope Pius VII again had to flee Rome until the congress of Vienna and the Battle of Waterloo.

Exactly 200 years from today (May 24, 1814), when Pope Pius VII re-enter Rome, he declared that the feast of Mary, Help of Christians be celebrated in the Roman calendar.  It then spread from there.
