May 5th. Feast Day of St. Pope Pius V (1504 – 1572)

St. Pope Pius V was elected in 1566.  At time the Catholic Church was in very difficult times with wide spread protestant rebellion and the Ottoman muslims ravaging Christendom.

Pius V_tombHis tomb is in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of St. Mary Majors.  This saint was pope for only 6 years.  In that very short time:

1) He organized the Battle of Lepanto under Don Juan of Austria and with the help of the Holy Rosary, miraculously was able to defeat the huge Ottoman Turkish fleet, Oct. 7, 1571.

3) Helped the poor.

4) Built many new Churches (The basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Assisi), school and hospitals .

5) Implemented the decrees of the Council of Trent with St. Charles Borromeo’s help.

6) Promulgated the Roman Missal (known as Pope Pius V Missal today) and Codified the Holy Latin Mass of St. Gregory the Great and decreed it to be used all over the Catholic World (if they were not already offering an older rite).
