Ash Wednesday Traditional Catholic Fast and Abstinence

As we approach Ash Wednesday we need to be reminded of the fast and abstinence required on this Catholic holy day of atonement.

Ash Wednesday 20121) No meat.  (You may eat fish, cheese and beans).

2) I full meal and two half meals.

This day not just about fasting.  It is also about prayer.  All over the world Catholics will be praying and fasting for their own sins and for their conversion.  We also pray for the conversion of everyone to stop sinning and to become holy Catholic christians.

“In the books both in the Old Law and in the New that the men who repented of their sins bestrewed themselves with ashes and clothed their bodies with sackcloth. Now let us do this little at the beginning of our Lent that we strew ashes upon our heads to signify that we ought to repent of our sins during the Lenten fast.” Aelfric of England 991 (From New Advent: Catholic encyclopedia)
